Commissioners condemn Senator Hanson’s racist remarks targeting First Peoples

Australian Human Rights Commission Media Release

The Commissioners responsible for First Peoples social justice and combating race discrimination have rejected racist, dehumanising comments against First Peoples by Senator Pauline Hanson.

‘This country prides itself on shared values of fairness, dignity and respect. The Senator’s comments utterly contradict these values and have no place in the national conversation,’ said Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Katie Kiss.

‘Such commentary is a tactic to divide us at a time when we need to come together. In fact, people have come together over the past 24 hours, across the political spectrum, to criticise the Senator’s comments. For that, I am heartened. But the harm caused should not be underestimated.

‘Australia’s First Peoples are the custodians of the world’s oldest continuing cultures and are vital to shaping who we are as a nation. Their knowledge, leadership, creativity and continuing survival enrich us all, and have done so for tens of thousands of years.

‘Indigenous artists inspire generations and deepen how we view ourselves and the world around us. And Elders are the conduits of history, generously sharing their wisdom and lived experience so each of us can learn, reflect and grow.

‘First Peoples have endured generations of discrimination, exclusion and attempted erasure. Public discussion of Australia’s history and identity must be grounded in respect, truth-telling and a recognition of the enduring strength and contribution of First Peoples.’

Race Discrimination Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman said: ‘Whether our ancestors arrived more than 200 years ago, or we are recent migrants, we all live on lands and waters that were maintained by and hold the cultures of First Peoples. Recognising that gives us strength and brings us together. Denigrating First Peoples does the opposite and lessens all of us.

‘When public figures use language that dehumanises entire groups of people, it causes real harm. History has shown that when people are portrayed as less deserving of dignity, respect or belonging, discrimination and exclusion are more likely to follow.

‘We must take meaningful steps to ensure racism is identified and prevented wherever it occurs, including in our institutions. That is why one of the recommendations of the National Anti-Racism Framework is for anti-racism training for all Parliamentarians.

‘Public officials have a responsibility to lead with integrity and uphold the dignity of all Australians. The standard must be clear – racism has no place in Australia, least of all in our halls of power.’

  1. It appears that the person in question suffers from a rare but catastrophic disorder where the brain (remarkable small), cannot connect with the mouth (remarkably loud), in a way that irrational outbursts cannot be self-moderated.

  2. It would be good for Hanson to read the observations of James Cook on the Australian Aborigines as recorded in his journal:

[I]n reality they are far more happier than we Europeans; being wholy unacquainted not only with the superfluous but the necessary conveniences so much sought after in Europe, they are happy in not knowing the use of them. They live in a Tranquillity which is not disturb’d by the Inequality of Condition: The Earth and sea of their own accord furnishes them with all things necessary for life … they live in a warm and fine Climate and enjoy a very wholesome Air.

  3. The nice thing about the PHONeys is that their self-appointed dictator has the natural ability to offend anybody just as a matter of course during the day. When she gets into gear she is very capable of swapping the feet in her mouth without dropping a syllable, while making an utter fool of herself.

SBS had ”The First Inventors” series on Tuesday 8:00-9:00PM describing how Aboriginal communities learned to properly manage the Australian environment before the European invasion destroyed all their work out of European & Anglo-Celtic ignorance.

A series worth watching!! Even Pawlier would learn some facts about Aboriginal farming practices, given that she appears to be unable to read or write. The story told to immigrant Australians is convenient and false. Hunter Gatherers perhaps but in a much more structured manner than the ”official history” propaganda.

Check out the first hand accounts by European explorers encounters with Aboriginal communities and their impression of their communities, before they too often destroyed the stone buildings, burned the food stores and raped some of the women.

  4. The fact that even Jacinta Price is cheesed off about what the Pelican said stresses just how far beyond the pale those remarks were. And yet the rusted-on PHONies will applaud her for it. Sometimes I despair over this country.

  5. Hanson political pox is now spreading dangerously among dullard cattleskulled slow learners, social and political oppos, who seem to be in far greater numbers than ever. This pox could ruin Australia’s future. Avoid contact, scrub, correct the media world full of shitteryrupertymerdeockery, and hope for some, any, better leadership, with civility and decency. How inCredlinable that political shitheads seem ready to Bolt in…and Marks my word, the ABC is sick nowadays.
