I read the finance pages. It’s one of the few areas where they tend to give you the facts…
Of course, there’s a certain way of looking at those facts which may not be consistent with people who possess normal human emotions such as when one of the economists wrote that if his 68 year old father couldn’t leave the house and play tennis then he’d probably rather be dead so that even though Covid restrictions may be saving his life, what was the point? (No, I’m not making this up and no, the writer had not consulted his father about it either…)
So, I’ve read a lot about how Labor’s CGT changes have crashed the housing market and I’ve read heaps on how Labor’s spending is fueling inflation and I’ve read a lot about how small businesses are struggling and how generally everything is Labor’s fault. However, I had no idea how far this reached until I saw an article about how much house prices in the USA were falling and how this was a concern.
Imagine that, Labor has done it again. Just like when they caused the Global Financial Crisis…
Remember the GFC… Labor were criticised for spending all that money to prevent a recession and the widespread collapse of the economy and then they needn’t have bothered because we were one of the only countries where there was no recession…
Of course, some of you might want to suggest that it was good economic management that prevented the recession but how can that be when the sensible economic managers were all saying that Labor went too hard, too early and there’d be nothing left when the recession hit and Labor were just lucky that we were a country that didn’t get one.
Just as I’m sure that some of you will try to suggest that the sluggishness may be because the Reserve Bank is determined to kill off inflation by increasing interest rates but that would be letting Labor off the hook because we all know that Labor is responsible for the rise in fuel prices which is one of the prime drivers of inflation… I mean, if Labor had just gone and helped Donald Trump then we’d have kept the Strait open and…
Oh, I give up!
I just can’t write satire any more. It’s all too ridiculous and I can’t compete with Trump and One Notion and the refusal of people to look at things calmly and go, “Yeah, this is pretty much what we can agree on let’s debate the differences!” Instead we get Angus Taylor saying things like, “This is the worst govenment ever and we need to get rid of them!” which would be fine if he actually articulated what he thinks that they’re doing wrong and what he’d do to fix it.
I made a comment on some stupid post today about the Victorian Liberals getting rid of the Treaty here. I wasn’t even debating the pros and cons of the Treaty, I just pointed out that the No vote about the Voice to Parliament did NOT mean that “We voted against this” because it was a separate question and people were told that this was about a change to the Constitution and this would be permanent.
But no, the failure of the Voice Referendum has been co-opted by every racist to back their idea. And I’m not saying that every person who voted against it was a racist; the No campaign was at pains to point that out. But now, every racist statement is backed by a claim that people voted No to one thing so they can use that when they claim something else.
If Labor were getting a hard time about their failure to cancel AUKUS or some of their foreign policy or a lack of action on climate or their inaction in areas like health, education and welfare, yeah, I could go along with it, but when it’s the economy…
After all, inflation is still less than four percent and unemployment is under five. Most of the time in the past fifty years these would be considered great figures. I know that doesn’t mean that people aren’t doing it tough and that there aren’t problems but we don’t have ministers saying things like if you can’t afford a house, get a better paying job.
