One Nation MP David Farley is shaping up to be a man of integrity – something unusual in One Nation. After his chat on Insiders with David Speers it seems Mr Farley has a much better grasp of One Nation’s immigration figures than his party leader.
Mr Farley stated that the One Nation party’s Net Overseas Migration (NOM) target is a “true NOM” of 130,000, plus a minimum of 100,000 additional skilled and regional workers, bringing their total estimated intake to roughly 230,000 migrants annually, very similar to the proposal we expect the Labor government to adopt.
Mrs Hanson immediately came out and said that Farley was wrong and a sheepish Barnaby Joyce sort of backed her up but it seems that Mr Farley was spot-on and whilst one Nation want to make immigration an issue for the 2028 election it seems that the numbers aren’t going to work for them unless they tell porkies and, as they will never be accountable for their numbers, they probably will stick with the porkies.
Whilst Labor’s Tony Burke has yet to make a formal announcement the federal Labor government’s official Net Overseas Migration (NOM) forecasts and current data indicate a targeting of a long-term level of 225,000 per year by 2027–28.
So Mr Farley was right and his party leaders just want to muddy the waters so that they can attack the government.
The question is, how long will Mr Farley stay with One Nation – it must be extremely difficult for an intelligent person like Farley to sit down with fools.

Joyce: Oh, you can’t help that, we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.
Farley: How do you know I’m mad?
Joyce: You must be, or you wouldn’t have come here.
Who is Included in NOM – ABS
Because NOM is based strictly on the duration of a person’s stay rather than a specific visa quota, it captures a broad mix of people:
Temporary Visa Holders: This is often the largest component and includes international students, working holidaymakers (backpackers), and temporary skilled workers who stay for over a year including PALM workers who are international employees from participating Pacific Island nations and Timor-Leste who come to Australia under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme to fill workforce shortages
Permanent Visa Holders: New migrants arriving on permanent skilled, family reunification, or humanitarian visas.
Australian Citizens: Citizens returning to live in Australia after an extended period abroad, or conversely, those moving overseas long-term.
New Zealand Citizens: Kiwi citizens moving to Australia under special category visa arrangements.

The twenty years of obsessing over the nebulous NOM border movement formula masks gross ignorance when’s it’s a variable, fed by many other variables and misrepresented as a fixed or constant migration program that can be capped like permanent migration is; while representing humanity or ‘the other’ as a ‘number’…..

Tanton’s advice to avoid allegations of racism was to focus upon and ‘get people talking about immigrants’ as a population growth driver and blame them for everything; till he did not follow his own advice caught out requesting a tour of deep south lynching sites…..
Meanwhile nowadays avoiding the demographic facts of increasing longevity through better health, as a driver of long term permanent population growth, after 40 years of below replacement fertility locally, and global youth numbers are static ~2 billion (see Rosling et al).
Short-medium term spikes of temporary border movements under the NOM, which is a fiscal solution, are not a significant driver of long term population growth, as the majority will have departed.
Due to ageing we have relatively more retirees vs fewer working age taxpayers (includes NOM temps), ie. increasing old age dependency ratios till mid century (see Cataggio, The Senior); claiming or willing on workforce participation is not a concrete solution, but a hopeful tactic to try avoid immigration…..

Pawlein has a dictator’s grip on all aspects of the PHONeys, especially finances. Jiminy Ashby has his eye on the leadership prize despite the call for a family dynasty while Beetrooter continues to embrace stranger Canberra street planter boxes and any beer in reach at every time of day.
So where does an experienced former corporate executive go to discuss ideas for political policies?? Anywhere but the PHONeys party room!!
A natural match for the Liarbrals?? Well, new PHONey memberships have a history of short futures and Farley seems to be using politics as a pre-retirement gig to boost his superannuation.
Meanwhile super contributions accumulate for politicians regardless of the party they allegedly represent, and Beetrooter has demonstrated that ”jumping ship” can be achieved without fear of losing voter support by requiring a fresh election on his ”new” political polices ….. and it protects the ever important, ever increasing political superannuation financial balance.
So, when has voter opinion ever been important to politicians living under the Canberra Bubble??
Pity. The Farrer electorate has an excellent credible local INDEPENDENT candidate in Michelle Milthorpe who hopefully her many supporters will be able to encourage to run for election again in 2028.

WA Liberal leader Basil Zemplas has openly stated that with Liberal preferences, a One Nation victory in Secret Harbour would be a win for the Liberals in WA.
Rather than claw back their own base, the Liberals ran a passive campaign. This effectively conceded the seat to One Nation, allowing them to act as the primary challenger to Labor.
There is something fundamentally wrong with strategists at Liberal HQ which will ultimately see them concede conservative domination in Australian politics to Mrs Hanson and her backer, Gina Rinehart.
I have little time for the coalition but it is sad to see them kill their own party in this way.
@ Terry Mills: It appears that Basil Zemplas (aka ”Fawlty”) is more ego that political understanding.
The major parties chose to widely advertise the fact that they were NOT standing in the Farrer bye-election to avoid the PHONeys. Now the elected PHONey MP is ALREADY TALKING ABOUT BECOMING AN INDEPENDENT WITHOUT RESIGNING and standing alone as an Independent. A political sceptic could reasonably conclude that Farley has taken the prize and spat in the face of Handjob, Ashby and Beetrooter. This strategy removes any personal cost of conducting a fresh political campaign especially without any group of volunteers to campaign on his behalf and man pre-selection and polling day booths.
The consequences for Farley will be NO CHANGE to his super entitlements and keeping access to the Parliamentary Allowances Scheme, the two money earners to boost his retirement income at least until 2028.
Some readers may suggest that labelling the Farrer MP ”David Freeloader” may be appropriate.
All of a sudden Pauline Hanson and James Ashby are very coy about their attempts to obtain funding from the US National Rifle Association back in March 2019. Ashby and other senior figures from One Nation were caught on camera seeking up to $20 million in political donations from the US National Rifle Association (NRA) in exchange for a promise to weaken Australia’s strict gun control laws.
National Rifle Association media liaison personnel were filmed coaching the One Nation politicians on public relations strategies to manipulate public opinion after mass casualty events. This included script instructions to publicly “shame” gun control advocates. In exchange for the funding, Ashby and Dickson [Steve Dickson the former One Nation Queensland state leader) promised to secure the balance of power in the Australian Parliament and water down the landmark National Firearms Agreement (NFA).
One Nation now want to distance themselves from their past funding activities. Could it be that One Nation, now that they have access to Gina Rinehart’s millions are going legit?
You won’t find that anybody at One Nation now wants to discuss these activities, including Barnaby Joyce who is usually available to give his views on anything.
One Nation’s courting the NRA for funding might even play out well for them in the regions, but it is not likely to in the urban areas, where most of the seats are. Yes, that shady history should be brought up.
“… access to Gina Rinehart’s millions …” – that One Nation has voted against the interests of the working class and that it has corporate backing, should also be brought up.
So should One Nation’s dinners where people pay thousands to get access to Pauline Hanson or other senior members – hardly representative of the working class.
Only, what is to be said about “ Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Labor Party are trying to launder the $1 million “donation” they were promised by Felix Lee by breaking it up to smaller amounts and having it donated by different people”?
What is to be said about fossil fuel companies’ massive donations to Labor while Labor approves new gas and coal fields?
What is to be said about the gambling industry’s donations to Labor as Labor waterdowns the gambling reform legislation?
How is Labor voting down a Green’s bill to ban accepting gifts from the gambling industry good for the country?
Much is said about the quality and motives of One Nation candidates – so it should be.
What is to be said about Labor apparently standing “a candidate who works as a lobbyist for Woodside and lives 60 kilometres outside the electorate” (Greens) in the Secret Harbour by-election?
There has been discussion about Labor continuing the GST allocation to the Labor WA government, allowing it to run surpluses in the billions. Yet, according to the Greens,
It’s not a coincidence that Secret Harbor is just fifteen minutes drive away from Rockingham’s makeshift campsite of hundreds of people – including families with children – dubbed the “street of despair”.
It is highly likely, imo, One Nation serves the corporations. But, we know, or should do, imo, that Labor serves the corporations and not the people. Why isn’t that being talked about?
The last time I looked it was Labor that teamed up with the Coalition and One Nation to dump 140,000 reciprients off the NDIS.
