Rave Reviews, Apparently

Karoline Leavitt proudly declared that Donald Trump’s Davos speech “got rave reviews.” Which is true – provided you’re willing to broaden the definition of rave to include confusion, suppressed laughter, and the collective facial expression of people reassessing their life choices.

Down at my local pub, Old Jack was reportedly so overcome by the President’s “inspirational” address that he stood up, slapped the bar, and shouted a round of drinks. “Never heard anything like it,” Jack said, moments before asking what Davos was and whether Trump had won it.

This, it seems, is the new global benchmark for international acclaim.

At Davos itself – that annual gathering of central bankers, CEOs and diplomats who speak fluent acronym – Trump delivered a masterclass in grievance-based freestyle. It was less a speech than a spoken-word stream of consciousness, stitched together with superlatives and old resentments. Tariffs were “beautiful.” Allies were “ripping us off.” Windmills were still doing whatever it is windmills are accused of doing this week.

The audience sat politely, the way one does when a distant relative begins explaining how they really understand geopolitics after three whiskies and a podcast.

But in Leavitt-world, optics are reality. If people weren’t clapping, it’s because they were stunned. If they weren’t smiling, it’s because Europeans don’t smile. And if they were openly mocking the speech afterward, that just proves it “hit a nerve.”

Leavitt’s “rave reviews” appear to have been sourced from the same place Trump’s election claims, crowd sizes, and net worth figures come from: vibes, vibes, and more vibes.

There is something almost impressive about the discipline required to stand at a podium and insist that global embarrassment is global admiration. It takes confidence – or a complete immunity to shame. Possibly both.

Back at the pub, Jack was now explaining the speech to anyone who’d listen. “He told them what for,” Jack said proudly. “They need to hear it.” When asked what it was, Jack shrugged. “Didn’t catch that bit. But he spoke for ages. That’s leadership.”

And that’s the clincher. In Trump’s America, length substitutes for substance, volume for vision, and rambling for resolve. A speech doesn’t need to persuade the world – it just needs to reassure the faithful that their man is still shouting.

So yes, Karoline Leavitt is right. Trump’s Davos speech got rave reviews.

Just not from Davos.

Cheers, Ms Leavitt. The drinks are on Jack.

  1. Leavitt, who lacks most things lackable, knows what to say. Loyalty, and Adolf’s lads had that a’plenty, is essential to distortion and deep untruthfulness, her chosen career. Trump doesn’t just shit himself, oh no!! He can fool himself, thrill himself and even inflate himself. It’s the emptiness of it all, the horrible vision of agonies to come…it’s the nappies that contain the policies and plans…

  2. Rumour has it that Karoline Leavitt is the love-child of Kelly-Anne ‘Alternative Facts’ Conway & Donald ‘Lies R Me’ Trump.

  3. Is there any truth in the rumor that Karoline Leavitt appears in the Epstein files that TACO Trumpery is obstructing at every possible opportunity??

  4. Leavitt is a feather-head, like Susssssssan Ley, who also lives in a dream world.

How can people be this zombie?

  5. Another gem written … thanks Roswell for this good chuckle.
I think maybe the leave-it chick is correct. Reviews are made by many on the lengthy meandering public speeches and the endless nightly raves from one of probably quite a few different devices, by the orange tinted Dumpster.

Seems though, the only real ‘rave reviews’ ( with
Leave-Its meaning of the description ) he receives are from this aggressive little blonde spokesperson at the White House podium. Do we all wish she would just ‘leave it’ alone and disappear somewhere ? If she has any luck at all she will one day upset the boss and get herself fired.

  6. @paul walter:

Might I suggest these women are chosen by male RW strategists for their looks, lowbrow conservatism, malleability & so on (Leavitt is at the same time a practising Catholic, pro-life, and a brazen liar). They represent themselves exclusively and others only for money. US Leavitt’s hubby is a rags to riches real estate developer more than twice her age, etc, etc.

As to Ley, probably a similar mix of conservatism, rank opportunism, and the kind of serendipitous advancement that only looks can bring. There’s unlikely to be much more between the ears, however, than that self-indulged thick-skinned self-interest that is its own reward (til it isn’t).

  7. You’re quite right, Herbert.

These people run dangeous fantasies as policy and they are incredibly disruptive.
I’m wondering if Minneapolis might be the beginnings of a sense of disappointment in the US people generally and the beginnings of a fightback.

As for Ley- could have made a difference-couldnt, too narrow.
Even if she had wanted to, her so called followers would have kneecapped her.
