We have reached the point – actually well past the point – where Zionism is being touted as an excuse for any kind of horror being meted out to the citizens of Gaza. In fact the Israelis are dangerously close to a world that actually DOES hate all Jews, when I suspect many of the are just as horrified.

And now we have last week’s release of the first Report on antisemitism by Australia’s 1st Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism in Australia, Jillian Segal.
The Herald’s Chip Le Grand probably sums up the core concerns re her report’s punitive recommendations for interfering in universities and so on. But the PM is himself responsible for repeated failures to publicly clarify the distinction between antisemitism and anti-Zionism for the community more broadly, as if such a public clarification could not be done without justifying the murderous attack on Jewish civilians in Southern Israel perpetrated by Hamas on October 7th, 2023.
To add insult to injury we learn that Ms Segal and her husband have financially supported the far right organization, Advance (previously Advance Australia).

While it may be unsurprising – especially in light of the torpedoing of the Voice referendum by, inter alia, the collective efforts of Advance, The Centre for Independent Studies, and so on – that we have well-funded offshoots of influential far right US organizations operating in Australia whose purpose is to influence and manipulate governments at home and abroad, Segal’s association is nothing short of scandalous, and indeed begs the question as to the wisdom of her appointment.
We may have dodged a bullet with Dutton’s massive electoral defeat, but for those who care about protecting our democracy, it’s the government we voted for that we need to keep an eye on.
Now we have a situation; we have division and violence in the community the potential for which might have been addressed before the issues were negligently allowed to fuse, simmer, and fester, and we have Ms Segal’s covert attempts at overreach snugly embedded in the same conflations.

Whether it was the Aukus agreement that shackled us permanently to the destructive politics of the US, or how much of this farrago was the legacy of previous Coalition governments, or what the hell it was that has painted Albanese into this once preventable corner, his democratic pretensions have been given the lie by Segal’s now very public political affiliations and his political pragmatism.

Given our vassal-style relationship with a pro-Israel superpower engaged in yet another proxy war, where does sovereign Australia draw the line? How much suffering is too much suffering, how many lives must be lost before any level of criticism of Israel is brooked?
Never enough, clearly. But even legitimate non-violent dissent and protest against Netanyahu’s murderous regime could become a tipping-point for Oz democracy if the PM surrenders to the politics of the moment and legislates the First Envoy’s recommendations.
