For nearly a decade, the United States has teetered on the edge of democratic backsliding, inching toward something far darker. In March 2023, I wrote “One Step Away from Total Fascism,” observing:
“The news from America has been a relentless parade of horrors: mass shootings (as ever), the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the Trump administration’s catastrophic pandemic response, brazen corruption, acts of treason, and the January 6 insurrection. One might assume we’d become numb that it couldn’t possibly worsen. Yet it does. And invariably, at the heart of it all stands a fanatical, out-of-touch Republican.”
A follow-up piece expanded on this warning. Both articles catalogued evidence that the U.S. was, as their titles declared, one step from fascism.
Now, two years later, that step has been taken.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem have laid bare the erosion of democratic norms. Her declaration that federal forces would remain in Los Angeles to “liberate” it from “socialist and burdensome leadership” – targeting Gavin Newsom, California’s governor and L.A.’s mayor – reeks of politicised authoritarianism. The word “liberate” is particularly chilling, evoking occupation rather than governance, and suggesting federal overreach into state sovereignty. Such rhetoric aligns with historical fascist tactics: centralising power, suppressing dissent, and dismantling institutional checks.
Reports reveal alarming context: Noem federalised 2,000 National Guard troops and sought to deploy U.S. Marines against protesters, potentially violating the Posse Comitatus Act. Governor Newsom’s lawsuit accusing the administration of an “illegal takeover” of the National Guard underscores the constitutional crisis at hand. Meanwhile, the forcible removal of Senator Alex Padilla during Noem’s press conference and violent crackdowns on journalists signal a broader assault on dissent – a hallmark of authoritarian regimes.
This is not yet full-blown fascism, but the parallels to early-stage authoritarianism are undeniable:
- Demonising opponents as “socialists” (a term weaponised to justify repression).
- Militarised domestic interventions, blurring lines between public safety and suppression.
- Erosion of federalism, with state autonomy trampled under the guise of “law and order.”
Noem’s defenders argue these measures are necessary to quell unrest and secure borders. But when “restoring order” entails occupying cities, silencing critics, and overriding elected officials, the pretext collapses. The real threat is not chaos – it is the normalisation of authoritarianism.
The resilience of American democracy now hinges on whether institutions, the press, and the public resist this slide. History shows how easily emergency measures become permanent tools of control.
Dear reader, we need your support
Independent sites such as The AIMN provide a platform for public interest journalists. From its humble beginning in January 2013, The AIMN has grown into one of the most trusted and popular independent media organisations.
One of the reasons we have succeeded has been due to the support we receive from our readers through their financial contributions.
With increasing costs to maintain The AIMN, we need this continued support.
Your donation – large or small – to help with the running costs of this site will be greatly appreciated.

“This is not yet full-blown fascism. There is no single-party rule, no total media blackout”.
But it is. MAGAt’s rule both houses. A Senator asks a question and is forced to the ground and handcuffed BY THE FBI! Hooded goons are kidnapping people off the streets and dumping them in basements. Don’t just take my word for it –
Lawrence Britt: 14 Characteristica of Facism –
Fascism is characterized by fourteen key traits, including powerful nationalism, disdain for human rights, identification of enemies as a unifying cause, supremacy of the military, and controlled mass media. Other traits include rampant sexism, obsession with national security, intertwining of religion and government, protection of corporate power, suppression of labor power, disdain for intellectuals, obsession with crime and punishment, and rampant cronyism and corruption.
1.tick, 2.tick, 3.tick, 4.tick,,,,14.tick.
4th, you are indeed correct. My head was elsewhere when I wrote that (a couple of fascist regimes in Europe last century).
Thanks to you I picked up another error. Both have been corrected.
Trump and his adolfian close support must be eliminated, atomised, evaporated, now. The civilised world and our planet require salvation from the orange orifice’s oafish odours. We are reduced in juvenile humiliations and backwardness…
This is really crossing the threshold into total fascism:

And Wayne Ivey, the epitome of the bloated unintelligent southern sheriff of old comedies and movies, would, I expect, be touted as a hero for his actions in killing the insurrectionist traitors and un-American scum…I mean protestors.
That’s scary, GL. 😮
Meanwhile, back at the scene of Israel’s genocide,Bibi the Butcher has taken advantage(again)of the Tangerine Tosser’s temper tantrum against his own country, by launching strikes against Iran.
Anything is justified if it keeps the monster out of gaol, even if it means starting World War 111.
Well, at last some good news.
A US federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to return control of the National Guard in LA to the California Governor.
Trump has exceeded his authority once again and it seems that the only way he will be brought to heel is by the rule of law impartially applied.
Trump will probably now appeal to the Supreme Court and we have to rely on the same impartiality from the highest court in the land.
Meanwhile, quite incredibly, Netanyahu has commenced bombing raids on Iran striking civilian and government infrastructure: he calls it self-defence (again). The last time he indulged in self-defence, 55,000 men, women and children were massacred in Gaza.
Inevitably the Iranian authorities will take retaliatory action!
Terry,
It’s been “temporarily” oveturned.
