The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) is calling on supporters across Australia and around the world to get involved in Save the Koala Month, returning from 1 to 30 September.
Established in 1989, Save the Koala Month is one of AKF’s longest running and most important annual campaigns, encouraging people to take meaningful action to support Koalas and the conservation of their habitat.
AKF Chair Deborah Tabart OAM said the campaign was created to give people a practical way to help. “Save the Koala Month came about when I decided there had to be a way to fundraise. Our first was 1989,” Ms Tabart said.
More than three decades later, Save the Koala Month continues to inspire individuals, schools, workplaces and community groups to turn their love for Koalas into action through fundraising, education and conservation initiatives.
Supporters are encouraged to host workplace morning teas, organise community fundraisers, launch online donation campaigns or create their own unique fundraising activities. Every effort helps support AKF’s ongoing work to keep Koalas in the wild.
This year, AKF is also inviting community groups, workplaces and schools across Australia and beyond to participate in its first inaugural Favourite Creature Day, a new initiative designed to inspire people to celebrate the animals they love while learning about wildlife conservation.
Held on Save the Koala Day (Friday 25 September), Favourite Creature Day encourages people to dress as, learn about, or champion their favourite creature while raising funds for Koala conservation. The initiative provides fundraising groups with an engaging way to connect young people with the natural world and the importance of protecting wildlife habitats.
In addition to fundraising, supporters can get involved all throughout September by donating, adopting a Koala, shopping from the Save the Koala Shop, sharing AKF educational resources, or supporting the Plant-a-Tree Program, where trees are planted at Quinlans, one of AKF’s Environmental Reserves.
With Koalas continuing to face pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation, Save the Koala Month provides an opportunity for everyone to play a role in protecting one of Australia’s most iconic species.
The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) is the principal non-profit, non-government organisation dedicated to the effective management and conservation of the Koala and its habitat. Our main goals are to refine and update the Koala Habitat Atlas mapping of all wild Koala habitat and to get the Koala Protection Act enacted to ensure Koalas and their habitat are protected.
