There was a time when presidents measured themselves against history. Today, America’s president appears to measure himself against anyone who dares disagree with him.
His latest target? Sir Paul McCartney.
McCartney is not a political rival, a foreign adversary, or even a journalist. He is a musician.
Yet, in the President’s sights, it is not merely the man but the legacy that must be dismantled.
According to Donald Trump, the Beatles were “never talented,” “overrated,” and “a disaster.”
But history has a funny habit of refusing to bend to personal grievance. The Beatles transformed popular music, revolutionised recording techniques, and reshaped popular culture in ways that are still studied sixty years later. Their influence echoes through almost every major artist who followed them; one need not even like their music to acknowledge the sheer scale of their achievement.
What makes this episode noteworthy is not that Donald Trump dislikes Paul McCartney – public figures are entitled to their tastes. It is the pattern it represents.
Under this administration, criticism is no longer something to be answered; it is something to be destroyed. When disagreement arises, judges become corrupt, journalists become enemies, universities become indoctrination factories, and former military leaders become traitors. Now, one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated cultural icons joins the list as simply “washed up.”
Every disagreement is personalised. Every critic becomes an opponent. Every opponent becomes an enemy.
Democratic leadership traditionally demands a certain baseline of confidence – a willingness to tolerate criticism without treating it as an existential threat. Free societies flourish precisely because disagreement is accepted as a natural part of public life.
The danger arises when that criticism becomes intolerable to the executive. If a legendary musician can be dismissed overnight as talentless simply for expressing a different political view, the standard being applied has nothing to do with art. It has everything to do with loyalty.
This latest dummy-spit, however, did not happen in a vacuum. It followed closely on the heels of a disastrous address to the nation.
If leadership requires clarity, the President’s latest address offered the exact opposite. What viewers received was less a deliberate statement of national policy than a free-form grievance session marked by frequent inaccuracies, abrupt tangents, and self-referential asides.
The speech drifted from conspiracy to conspiracy, revisited past electoral victories, blamed predecessors for current woes, and congratulated the administration for solving problems that still persist – all before closing with the declaration that America has never been stronger.
It was, in the end, just another typical Trump day. The presidential autocorrect remains firmly turned off.

It is interesting that major TV networks including ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN in the US chose not to broadcast Donald Trump’s prime-time national address live on their main television channels. They made the point that they were reluctant to broadcast unverified material that had not first been fact-checked.
Fox News carried the speech but noted immediately afterward that it was unable to confirm the veracity of the allegations made by Trump.
It is a sad reflection on this President that nobody actually believes him anymore [the boy who cried wolf?] and the fact-checking on the claimed Chinese (and Russian) interference with the 2020 US election process is already failing to stand-up to independent scrutiny.
I don’t understand why anyone is still discussing Trump in rational terms. The bloke is obviously off his fucking rocker. Whether it’s dementia or something else, I dunno, but he is clearly demented.
