However, democratic oversight is not about weakening a country’s defence. It is about ensuring that decisions involving extremely powerful technologies are accountable rather than made entirely behind closed doors.
Many of the most dangerous technologies in history have eventually required international rules, even when some countries initially resisted them. Nuclear weapons, chemical weapons and landmines are examples where global agreements emerged because the risks were too great to ignore.
The concern with military AI is similar. If autonomous systems begin making battlefield decisions without meaningful human control, the risks could escalate quickly.
Democratic oversight does not mean abandoning defence capabilities. It simply means ensuring that technologies capable of enormous harm are governed transparently and responsibly.
