The Irony Files: When Hypocrisy Becomes Policy

The U.S. Trade Secretary is throwing a tantrum over Canada’s audacity to hit back. After the U.S. slapped tariffs on Canadian steel and timber, Ottawa mirrored the move with tariffs on American goods. In diplomacy, this is called “reciprocity.” In Washington, it’s apparently “betrayal.”

“Unfriendly! Disruptive! Not what allies do!” the Secretary huffed, conveniently ignoring who threw the first punch. It’s a familiar script: the U.S. can dish it out, but don’t you dare return the favour. Reciprocity is only fair when America’s the one cashing in.

The irony doesn’t stop at the border.

In California, Republicans are apoplectic over Governor Newsom’s redistricting plan, which they claim tilts the electoral map toward Democrats. “Election rigging!” they scream. “A shameless power grab!” And, naturally, “We’ll see you in court!”

But why would Newsom pull such a stunt? Because Texas Republicans did it first. To cement their grip on power – and with a little nudge and a wink from President Trump – they redrew congressional districts to bolster the GOP’s slim House majority for the midterms. No outrage from Democrats – just action. They fled the state, denying Republicans the quorum needed to pass the plan.

Cue Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who branded the fleeing Democrats duty-dodgers and ordered their arrest. Apparently, the GOP’s issue isn’t gerrymandering – it’s who gets to wield the pen.

Whether it’s trade wars or electoral mapmaking, the pattern is clear: rules are sacred until they inconvenience the powerful. When the U.S. throws tariffs or Republicans redraw districts, it’s “strategy.” When others play the same game, it’s an attack on fairness, democracy, and the American way.

The hypocrisy isn’t subtle – it’s the playbook. And it leaves everyone else wondering: do they believe their own rhetoric, or are they just banking on our distraction?
