Clarke and Dawe: The Opposition Spokesperson on “Our Rules” and “Their Order”

Politician speaking about rules-based order chart.

INTERVIEWER: So the Prime Minister has said Australia is concerned about events in Venezuela, emphasised restraint, international law, and the need for stability.

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Yes. Very disappointing. Weak. Soft. Un-Australian.

INTERVIEWER: Because he didn’t immediately endorse decisive international action?

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Exactly. Unlike us, who support strong action.

INTERVIEWER: By “strong action,” you mean endorsing the United States abducting a foreign leader and prosecuting him under its domestic laws?

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Correct. That’s the rules-based order.

INTERVIEWER: That’s the rules-based order?

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Yes. Our rules. Their order.

INTERVIEWER: Canada and the UK took a position almost identical to the Prime Minister’s.

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Yes, but they’re different.

INTERVIEWER: How?

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Well, they’re allowed to be cautious. We’re in Opposition.

INTERVIEWER: France also stressed international law and process.

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: France always mentions law. It’s a habit.

INTERVIEWER: So when Australia aligns with Canada, the UK and France, that’s weakness – but when the Opposition cheers unilateral force, that’s strength?

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Exactly.

INTERVIEWER: Even though endorsing this sets a precedent where powerful countries can decide who’s legitimate and seize them?

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Only when we agree with it.

INTERVIEWER: So sovereignty matters?

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Deeply.

INTERVIEWER: When?

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: When it’s ours.

INTERVIEWER: And international law?

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Very important. Just not in the way you mean.

INTERVIEWER: And democracy?

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Absolutely. Preferably delivered by airstrike.

INTERVIEWER: Thank you for clearing that up.

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON: Strong leadership leaves no room for doubt.

  1. Grounded in the”Rule of law?” Both Ley and Cash demonstrate, once again, why they are a lost cause.Or maybe it’s an appeal to the rats deserting “the broad church”The sooner they and their partners in the Canberra Lobbyists sale yard vanish, the better off we’ll all be.

  2. The opposition (hah) is loaded with retrodills, deviates, drongoes, dregs, drunks (B.J.) drones and dreadfuls, Unfortunately, their ladies are usually worse. Common sense about LAW would surely require deep study, long experience, some balance, some prudence. But…

  3. this is the slippery slope to total anarchy – when any country decides the neighbouring government is “illegitimate” whether it is or not and starts assassinating leaders at will.

  4. Sussan Ley has noted once again that Penny Wong has not shed a tear over the events in Venezuela and neither has she called for three hearty cheers…………..yet another sign of weakness!

  5. I concur with all the above opinions, especially the exacting description of the so-called opposition by PP.

Further, I recognise that a superficial outburst by the present (today’s) misleader of the opposition reflects her inability to do the necessary research showing a trade embargo by the USA against Venezuela in retribution for the late President Charez (sp?) wanting the oil profits to benefit the Venezuelan people rather than US oil corporation shareholders.

Meanwhile the LABOR government continues the fore-lock tugging vassalage created by the worst Treasurer (Robodebt suicides anyone?) and COALition Prim Monster, Scummo the Lax, including the sovereignty destroying USUKA sub debacle requiring Australia to subsidise American economic decay by about $368 BILLION over the duration of the claim that nuclear powered subs will be delivered once they are totally redundant.

  6. Well written article Lachlan, actually had me grinning like a Cheshire cat!

Mental gymnastics of the worst kind all round in Parliament.
