Palestine Action Group Media Release

Thousands of aid trucks remain stranded at crossings outside Gaza, as Israel starves the Palestinian population. At least 127 people, including 85 children, have so far died from starvation, along with over a thousand who have been shot and killed while queueing for aid in recent weeks.

The deliberate starvation of 2 million Gazans is a part of a broader plan, repeatedly announced by Israeli leaders, to either kill or expel the entire Palestinian population from Gaza. No one can any longer deny that Israel’s aim in Gaza is genocide. Even if, under global pressure, Israel temporarily allows some food into Gaza, it will not spell the end of Israel’s goal of ethnically cleansing the strip, called by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu “the Trump Plan”.

This extraordinary situation has led the Palestine Action Group to call for a March for Humanity over the Sydney Harbour Bridge next Sunday, 3 August, to save Gaza. We call on everyone, every individual and every organisation, who cannot bear to do nothing in the face of this atrocity, to join with us.

As Australia’s most iconic symbol, a mass march across the Harbour Bridge will send a powerful message to the world, to Gaza, and to Israel, that we are determined to stand up for humanity.

We call on the NSW authorities, and the NSW Government, to facilitate this March for Humanity. We also invite the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, to participate. If he means what he says, that civilian casualties and death in Gaza are “completely unacceptable” and “completely indefensible”, and that Israel has “quite clearly” breached international law, then he will be glad to do so.

In 2023 the Harbour Bridge was closed for a special march to mark World Pride, which Anthony Albanese participated in. That same year saw the Bridge closed for several hours to shoot a scene for a Ryan Gosling film. The situation in Gaza is of such urgency that it is only right that it be temporarily closed to traffic next Sunday to allow for this March for Humanity. This march will reflect the views of the large majority of Australians, which polls show are opposed to the genocide in Gaza.

We continue to call on the Australian Government to stop arming Israel, to end the export of F-35 Fighter Jet components to Israel, and to sanction Israel now.
