No better… even worse

Here’s my say on the matter. I’ll keep it brief:

Americans supporting Trump’s attack on Iran are no better than Germans that supported Hitler’s attack on Poland in ‘39 and Japanese that supported Yamamoto’s attack on Pearl Harbor in ’41.

In fact, Americans supporting Trump’s attack are worse.

Unlike the Germans of ’39 and the Japanese of ’41, they had access to information to determine the attack was criminal and the safety and security to pronounce it criminal and push back against it.

Modern Americans live in an open society flooded with independent reporting, satellite imagery, diplomatic cables, and real-time analysis from multiple sources. They face no Gestapo raids for questioning the official narrative, no secret police disappearing critics, and no wartime censorship that silences dissent under threat of imprisonment or death.

They can freely debate, protest, vote, write, and organize against what they see as an unjustified use of force.

Choosing instead to cheer it on, while possessing all these advantages, removes any remaining excuse of ignorance or coercion that might partially mitigate the earlier historical cases.

To paraphrase Gertrude Stein… “A criminal war is a criminal war… is a criminal war.”

  1. Until the millions of Americans (and Australians for that matter) personally experience the horrors of war nobody really notices what’s happening elsewhere in the world.
Okay, the price of petrol is skyrocketing. We’ll blame “politicians” for that, without questioning the real cause.
Trump is a puppet being played by others with even more sinister motives. He is, without a doubt, a greedy entitled pos.
But he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.
The entities pulling his strings want unbridled power over the whole world.
And as a mother and grandmother, that is truly scary.

  2. In February joint talks with Iran were proceeding until Trump and Netanyahu decided on a surprise attack on the Iranian leadership.
This attack (dubbed Operation Epic Fury by the US and Operation Roaring Lion by Israel) assassinated several high-ranking Iranian leaders in Tehran.
This included the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei: The 86-year-old Supreme Leader of Iran, who had held power since 1989. He was killed when precision strikes leveled his official compound.

Numerous other high level Iranian operatives were also assassinated as well s family members including Mohammad Pakpour: The Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) .Ali Shamkhani: A high-level security advisor and former Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.Amir Hatami: The Iranian Defence Minister.

Inevitably the scheduled talks did not resume the following week and we still do not know what the Trump gameplan is and why he initiated this attack on Iran with Israel and how he intends to bring this war to a conclusion: not surprisingly trust between the parties has been severely eroded.

We have to ask the question; are those in the White House the right people to be negotiating global peace? The impression we get is that there is chaos in the Trump administration and maybe it’s time we handed over negotiations to the UN.

  3. It goes back even further, Terry.
In Trump’s first term, he canned the JCPOA that Obama had negotiated with Iran. All the relevant institutions agreed it was effective; there were thorough, regular inspections, nuclear material was purely for peaceful purposes, everything was hunky dory. But Trump couldn’t tolerate leaving any of Obama’s achievements intact, so he tore up the deal. And Iran did … well, whatever it did with its nuclear program, because we don’t have any reliable local intelligence about it any more due to the independent inspectors being withdrawn.
Trump caused the problem he claimed to be fixing, and everything he’s done since then has just been to profit from it and make it worse.

  4. Football, meat pies, kangaroos, Commonwealth Games medals and electric cars – Aussies are comfy in front of their tvs that are tuned away from geopolitics and the reality of brutal criminal wars conducted by USA. The “threat of bird flu” and anti-semitism over-rides all common sense and critical thinking. There is no empathy towards those suffering death and destruction in lands far away overseas.
