It’s quite a conundrum, isn’t it?
There are these Australian citizens in Syria and we don’t want them back because they might do something awful when they get back…
Of course, that’s true about everyone but some of these ISIS brides have shown that they don’t support Australian values and that should be enough to keep them – and their children -out. I mean, they may have committed some horrible crimes while they were over there. We don’t know and so they should be kept out at all costs even though some of them may have only gone over there because their husbands did and they were the sort of bride who did what their husband said… which is not the sort of Australian value that we like, even if some of Mr Howard’s crew may have been a bit ambivalent on that one.
Whatever, I think that the safest course of action is to do what Mr Albanese’s doing: say that the government won’t be helping and hope that they don’t get help from anyone else and if all else fails, just call them difficult…
While there are definitely a few problems with Labor’s approach, there are even more problems with the Liberal approach which can be summed up simply.
- Liberals have been quite strong on the idea that people who are citizens of other countries should be sent back home if they break the law. However, it seems that they’re not open to the idea of these people returning to Australia because we don’t want to take back our own citizens who’ve broken the law. And, in the case of the children, we don’t want to take them back, even if they haven’t. This leads to point 2
- We need some legislation to stop people who have legal rights to return from returning if we’re concerned that they might have broken the law, might break the law when they return or might not agree with John Howard. While we don’t know of anything specific that they’ve done that could mean that they were charged and jailed when they return, the presumption of innocence only applies to Coalition ministers and friends of Coalition ministers, so we need to do something to make impossible for them to return.
- The Liberals have told us that this is not about targeting individuals or groups but anyone who breaks the law. In the case of people who may be helping the ISIS brides to return, they haven’t broken any law, so we need to create some new laws so that we can charge them if they do.
- Angus Taylor said that we need to “shut the door on people who “bring hate and violence to Australia”. This, of course, doesn’t apply to shock jocks, because they’re already here and Alan Jones certainly didn’t encourage violence at Cronulla all those years ago.
- It’s unclear exactly what “active support” involves. For example, before an official issues a passport will they have to check that there are no skeletons in the person’s closet? Or will someone who sells them an airline ticket without appropriate checks be subject to the laws. And will helping someone who helped them be regarded as helping the helper and therefore helping a supporter of the ideology. And will the Lord help those who help themselves and will the Lord be guilty and charged?
- Will the laws only apply to ISIS or will they apply to other terrorist or banned organisations? Will this apply to Doctors Without Borders now that they’ve been banned from Gaza?
- Is there any thought to extending this to anyone mentioned in the Epstein files and will the Coalition support Albanese’s announcement that he agrees that the Andrew That Used To Be Prince should be removed from the line of succession?
Yes, there are indeed a lot of unanswered questions in this whole proposal.
Whatever, at least Angus isn’t as confused as a One Nation supporter who posted a video complaining about Senator Payman and ranting about how anyone elected to Parliament should be born in Australia and that Pauline would fix that once she became PM. I didn’t know how to break it to him that the other star of One Nation, Malcolm Roberts, was born in India, so Senator Hanson doesn’t seem to actually have a problem with “foreigners” being elected.
That’s the trouble with rules. Once you write them down, they apply to everyone and not just the people you want to hate!
but what about the australians that have gone to israel to join the IDF and have taken part in the genocide there? they are allowed to return to australia with no questions asked even though the may have committed multiple murders!i met one who openly bragged about how many palestinians he had killed! seems the politicians do not want to know about them because it will affect their “donations?
Eric, to add. It surely shouldn’t be just Australians who might have committed crimes, who if not having actually shot unarmed civilians themselves, have been willingly involved in genocide – what about their wives and children? Surely married to an IDF soldier, a rule applied to Isis ‘Brides’ (mostly widows) should also apply to Australians married to IDF soldiers, and their children.
Well said, Eric and Carol.
At the moment I don’t support the “values” espoused by either the Government or the Opposition regarding the women and children trying to return from Syria. Does that mean that ASIO is about to knock on my door with a one way ticket out of here?
While Albanese berates and demeans Australian woman in Syria and refuses point blank to help with full knowledge that they have not committed any crimes except being widowed single mothers like his own mother, an unwed mother. There are parallels between the Australian women in Syria and Albanese’s mother, they all made bad choices and made poor judgemental calls in who they fell in love with (Albanese himself is the master of poor judgement). Unlike the Albanese Labor Government Albanese’s mother was helped by the responsible and compassionate government of the day.
Now, to make matters worse, the feckless opposition wants to make it a crime for anyone helping them or anyone connected to ISIS, whose leader and now leader of Syria was welcomed to the Oval Office by Trump himself, to return home to Australia. In the mean time returning Australian genocidal baby killing IDF war criminals are not arrested but in stark contrast are welcomed home to Australia. These sadistic, callous, depraved low life criminals are time bombs walking our streets and yet under international law they are criminals but in Australiathey walk freely amongst us. What has happened to Australia and the West’s morals and principles? How is it that genocide is acceptable to Western politicians and media?
Thousands of foreign nationals, over 500 Australians, are serving in Israel’s military with the legal tolerance of their home states, while peaceful protest against the war is criminalised and violently met by goose stepping state police forces.This double standard exposes a deep failure of international law and accountability of those nations that signed the Convention of the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. What we are witnessing is a fully formed case of what can be described as the wilfull globalisation of the heinous crime of genocide and the crime against numanity of colonising occupation
Interesting comments here.
Carol Taylor’s is an understated gem.
@ All of the above; Agreed.
”The Liberals have told us that this is not about targeting individuals or groups but anyone who breaks the law.”
Funny how the LIARBRAL$ totally ignore ”anyone who breaks the law” among their own ranks. Consider:
1) Scummo bribing the gg David Hurley with a $17 MILLION PER YEAR funding of a ”leadership programme” to be appointed to the Five Secret Ministries;
2) the gg accepting the bribe and making those secret appointments;
Do we have to wait for Randy Andy to get persecuted before any Australian government will clean up this Royal Assent mess?
3) The sexual assault allegations five (5) weeks before the 2022 feral elections against then Treasurer Joshie Friedeggburgher that cost Australian taxpayers about $500,000 as a taxpayer funded settlement;
https://kangaroocourtofaustralia.com/2026/02/26/liberals-paid-500000-to-josh-frydenbergs-sexual-assault-victim-which-set-benchmark-for-brittany-higgins-2-4-million/
Does this matter require Epstein files scrutiny and subsequent disqualification from public office, or do the future plans of the ZIONAZI political puppeteers to install Joshie as the ZIONAZI PM after Anus Faylure take precedence??
4) Those enthusiastic Australian ZIONAZI supporters who ran away to Isrevil to ENLIST IN THE AMORAL IDF AND commit ethnic cleansing as part of the GAZA GENOCIDE to displace & dispossess Indigenous Palestinian land owners so that the international carpet-baggers, including TACO Trumpery related entities, may build the GAZA GOLD COAST residential housing for ZIONAZI supporters desirous of residing in an apartheid mono-theological pseudo-democracy.
These families in Syria are Australians and need government assistance to get home. SLO-MO-ALBO needs to remember his family roots and provide the necessary assistance to bring them home. All other matters may be resolved ….. EXACTLY AS THE ALBANESE LABOR GOVERNMENT has resolved the above matters.
How can there be a “Presumption of Innocence” when these women turned their back on our country?
As for the children, how many were born in Australia and how many were born, who knows where?
Like many who leave our country for “better” outcomes, when broke, sick or need a feed, it’s back to good old Australia.
If they do come back, where do we put them so they cannot do harm. Maybe this a good case for keeping them on Nauru.
@ David Stakes: A better solution would be to put Scummo, Hurley, Friedeggburgher & all the other COALition philanderers on Nauru WITHOUT ANY COMMS TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD ….. and forget to send the relief boat.
