Is America’s democracy on the brink of collapse?

Helen Reynolds’ recent article, “Is the United States Falling Apart?” poses a question with an unsettling answer: the U.S. is teetering dangerously close to unraveling. The evidence is hard to ignore. Democratic institutions, constitutional guardrails, and the rule of law are under relentless assault, with former President Donald Trump at the forefront of this erosion. His actions – most notably inciting the January 6th attempted coup without facing meaningful consequences – reveal a troubling truth: accountability is faltering.

The scariest part? There seems to be a lack of collective will to reverse course. Too many Americans still support Trump, a figure whose amoral, corrupt, and kleptocratic behavior has gone largely unchecked. This failure to hold him accountable sets a dangerous precedent, inviting other malevolent actors to exploit the same vulnerabilities. If there are no consequences for subverting democracy, what’s to stop the next usurper?

Other nations, like Brazil and South Korea, have shown it’s possible to hold insurrectionist leaders accountable through democratic and legal processes. Yet, in the U.S., political corruption and a compromised judicial system have failed to deliver justice. A politicised Supreme Court, corrupt judges, complicit Cabinet members, and enabling politicians have blurred the separation of powers, undermining the Constitution – the very foundation of the American experiment. The myth of American exceptionalism lies in tatters, as dead as the dodo.

This isn’t just about one man’s corruption anymore. It’s about a system riddled with duplicitous enablers who’ve allowed authoritarianism to creep closer. Without sweeping accountability for all involved – judges, officials, and politicians alike – the U.S. risks sliding into an authoritarian dictatorship. The question isn’t just whether America can recover; it’s whether it has the resolve to confront the rot and rebuild before it’s too late.

  1. Good and relevant. USA, exceptionally divided, has too many exceptionally ignorant, under educated, unsophisticated, undiplomatic, silly egotists.

  2. The captioned photo is deeply troubling.

These people seem to think they are drawing strength and religious piety and reverence by touching this man or touching somebody who is touching him. Even though the emperor has no religious beliefs or himself.

On a lighter note it reminds me of when, in the boy scouts, we would be hiking and should we pass a paddock with an electric fence, one boy would touch the fence and then a series of boys would create a chain reaction until somebody reached out to the scout master who, not being in on the joke, would jump from the jolt, much to the general amusement of the group.
They should try that in the Oval Office !

  3. Terry, the context of the captioned photo is simply that the people are Christian evangelists who are (or who believe they are) channelling God’s love towards Trump. Not drawing strength, piety or reverence, but acting as conduits to LoveBlitz the Bloat. All rather typically American evangelistically delusional.

  4. One doesn’t want to be excessively alarmist but everything points to those Donald having messianic delusions of grandeur fueled by a hatred of all minorities and supported by a sycophantic cabal of money-grubbing rent seekers and enabled by the subverted bodies which should be protecting the democracy. Nothing short of removal of the President can save American democracy. I believe a revolution is necessary.

  5. American democracy has collapsed. Has been in downfall since the breakup of the Soviet Union. Worse, is the fact we seem to be repeating the 1920&30s. Trump with his tariffs is providing the economic agenda to speed us to a great depression. The only thing unclear is how we end up. We even have the razor gangs of that period.

  6. Photos like the above are more than enough to induce nausea.
Home of the brave, land of the free is on the skids.

  7. America is already collapsed politically & morally & financially (but for the cover of ‘easing’ and for a brief moment by tariffs).

Their democracy is well & truly dead, with T-Rump just banging a few more nails in the coffin to make sure the zombies stay with the citizenry. Uncle Sam is fully transformed to a totalitarian autocracy.

Hopefully the T-Rumpian regime & the wrecked GOP will be ousted by vote or revolution by the mid-terms. Americans know how to do crazy vengeance if needs be.
