I just happen to be reading ‘The Privileged Few’ by Clive and Myra Hamilton.
There is a chapter, Replicating Priviledge: Elite Schools.
Fees are to ensure that only the privileged can afford to send their children to these schools, Government handouts are sought, political favours perhaps or the old school tie connections affirmed, yet most of these schools have cash on hand, enough to get an upgrade on the olympic pool, a new concert hall, a state of the art gym…. the list of needs goes on and on. The privileged kids must have the best.
While colleges such as Hale School or Scotch College have money to burn, they still have their hands out for government grants. The Gronsky report under the Gillard/Rudd government addressed this to some extent but when the LNP regained power, it was another ‘big spending ticket item’ to be dispensed with, but the contribution to the elite schools continued unabated.
I hate to think what could happen with that money if it were directed at public schools.
I was talking with someone on the train about a ‘troubled kids’ programme and mentioned how the intervention of that programme, which gets kids out of the school for a period of time, under the guidance of teachers dedicated to helping them, one on one, and how one child was probably saved from prison time by directing him into TAFE and subsequently into employment, where as his behaviour both at home and at school had been problematic to say the least. Police were called to help manage the kid. As I was talking, an aboriginal man basically told me to shut up because I didn’t know, I am not aboriginal, so had no right to speak of their kid.
He did not stop to ask any questions, just aggressively told me to shut up.
The child concerned was not aboriginal, but the man did not bother to listen to me explain that.
The point here is that there are programmes in the public system to address special needs, but they are struggling for funds, while the wealthy private schools cannot get enough.
It needs to end.
Deliberate, selfish and greedy!
