Australia is a nation that prides itself on free speech, robust debate, and the right to dissent. Yet, Jillian Segal’s sweeping antisemitism plan has ignited a firestorm of opposition, with Australians from all walks of life flooding X with outrage. The plan, touted as a shield against hatred, is being slammed as a sledgehammer that risks crushing free expression, silencing criticism of Israel’s actions, and punishing universities, artists, and citizens for daring to speak out. This isn’t just a policy debate – it’s a battle for the soul of Australia’s democratic values.
Segal’s report, handed to the Albanese government, proposes measures that sound like they were ripped from a dystopian playbook: strip funding from universities and cultural institutions that “fail” to combat antisemitism, cancel visas for visitors expressing “antisemitic views,” and monitor media to ensure “fairness and balance” in Middle East coverage. It even suggests a “report card” for universities to grade their handling of antisemitism, with the threat of a judicial inquiry by 2026 if they don’t comply. On paper, it’s about protecting Jewish Australians from a reported 300% surge in antisemitic incidents since October 2023. But dig deeper, and it’s clear why X is in meltdown: this plan risks weaponising the fight against antisemitism to “silence dissent’ and control narratives.
The public’s fury is palpable. On X, users are calling it a “dangerous” overreach, with some labeling Segal an “apologist for Israel” who’s pushing a plan that serves the Netanyahu regime more than Australian Jews. One user warned, “This can’t be allowed to happen. We cannot criminalise political opinion.” Another called it “hubris on steroids,” accusing Segal of crafting a plan that’s more about control than combating hate. The sentiment is clear: Australians see this as a direct threat to their right to criticise Israel’s actions – particularly its war in Gaza, which many view as genocidal – without being branded antisemitic.

At the heart of the controversy is the plan’s push to adopt a controversial definition of antisemitism, likely the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s, which critics argue conflates legitimate criticism of Israel with hatred of Jews. This isn’t a hypothetical fear. X users are already pointing to Segal’s plan as a tool to “suppress criticism of Israel’s war crimes” and “erode social cohesion.” Legal scholars and free speech advocates, such as the Australian Lawyers Alliance and UNSW professor Peter Slezak, have echoed this, warning that the plan’s measures – such as deporting visitors for their views or defunding universities – set a chilling precedent. If criticising a foreign government’s policies can cost you your visa or your university’s funding, what’s next? Punishing environmentalists for protesting fossil fuels? Silencing Indigenous voices for challenging colonial legacies?

The plan’s scope is staggering. Universities could face funding cuts if they don’t crack down on protests or speech deemed antisemitic, even if it’s peaceful activism against Israel’s actions. Artists and cultural festivals could lose grants for failing to meet vague “standards” on hate speech. Media outlets face “monitoring” to ensure they don’t publish “false or distorted narratives” – a phrase so subjective it could mean anything from biased reporting to tweets the government doesn’t like. And social media platforms? They’re expected to crack down on “anonymous hate accounts” and tweak algorithms to curb antisemitic content, potentially stifling open debate under the guise of safety. As one X user put it, “This is a sure fire way to get Australians to hate Jews. Enough with this bullshit.” The irony is painful: a plan meant to protect a community risks fueling resentment by casting too wide a net.

Prime Minister Albanese has tried to thread the needle, insisting that criticism of Israel is distinct from antisemitism and must be expressed peacefully. Yet his government’s hesitation to reject Segal’s plan outright has only fanned the flames. X users are demanding clarity: will Labor really back measures that could criminalise protest or punish universities for hosting debates? The Greens’ David Shoebridge nailed it, warning that space must be preserved for scrutinising Israel’s actions without fear of retribution. Australians aren’t just angry – they’re scared that their right to speak truth to power is on the chopping block.
This isn’t about denying the real pain of antisemitism. The arson attack on a Melbourne synagogue and the firebombing of a Sydney Jewish childcare centre are undeniable acts of hate that demand justice. But Segal’s plan swings too far, risking the very freedoms that make Australia a vibrant democracy. Education about Jewish culture and the Holocaust, as Segal proposes, is vital. But tying it to punitive measures such funding cuts or visa bans feels like a bait-and-switch – a noble cause used to justify control. X users aren’t buying it, with one calling it a plan to “legislate against Australians who want to PROTEST.”

The fight against antisemitism should unite us, not divide us. Yet Segal’s plan, with its heavy-handed tactics, threatens to do just that. Australians are taking to X to say enough is enough: we won’t sacrifice free speech to appease a poorly defined crusade. This isn’t just a policy – it’s a line in the sand. If Labor adopts this plan, it risks alienating a nation that values its right to speak, protest, and disagree. The meltdown on X isn’t just noise – it’s a warning. Australia deserves better than a plan that trades liberty for control. Let’s fight hate without torching our freedoms.

Great article Michael.let us hope Albo &Co step back and take a good hard look at the report…and dismiss the parts that call for the suppression of free speech and the threats to university funding. We don’t need to become another fascist state.Universities were once a hotbed of ideas, until they were inveigled into being run purely as a business.
Our Mr. Minns has already started down that path.
Albo should not have been panicked by the Zionists into appointing Segal, who has form in these matters.
The rotten core of Netanyahu and his extremist cronies are at the heart of the ‘antisemitic’ problem.
The appointment of JilliannSegal to do this review was another example of Albanese’s tin ear. Couldn’t he see that appointing someone with her evident pro-Zionist views and apparently draconian ideas was bound to elicit the harsh response she came up with. IF ( in my opinion a big if) such an envoy was really needed it should have been someone with real independence able to look at the issue dispassionately. Segal’s proposals, including adoption of the IHLA definition of anti-semitism, reek of repressiveness. The best thing Albanese could do is quietly shelve her report, thank her for her service and either abolish the position or appoint someone else. I have said before there is no justification for the very real examples of anti-semitism but It really is time to stop appeasing the Zionist lobby and its attempts to stifle legitimate criticism of Israel, the butcher Netanyahu, the Israeli Death Forces and their combined genocide in Palestine.
Albo’s hand picked Zionist now making recommendations, on behalf of a tiny minority population, to create policy and laws for the rest of us? How to create hate and social disharmony… Meanwhile racism, especially of First Nations people and Islamophobia, are rife and unchecked.
Albanese needs to reinterpret this report to cover discrimination of any ethnic or cultural group.
As it stands the recommendations favour the Jewish community above others.
Remember when we had that hiatus because so many federal politicians had dual citizenship?
How that placed them in a position of divided loyalties and hence unsuitable to hold a seat in the parliament.
If this report is enacted in full where do our loyalties lie?
A small righteous, exclusivist, triumphal activist extreme superstitious group grabbed land from the legal entity Palestine, as it was under the treacherous British in May 1948 and has gone on with known proven murder, theft, occupation, humiliation, ever since. Now this group wants to humiliate Australians into overlooking filthy grabbing criminality. We have law enough about speech, free or hate. No preferences for evil…For me, there is no god and nobody has seen one. There is no proof, no DNA, appearance, signature, photo, CIA or KGB file, nothing at all. Thus, there is no chosen race, promised land, heavenly host, exclusive master group, nothing. Let all of us fight for justice for ALL of us. Open free speech is essential, without fear.
Whilst NOBODY approves of that horrific criminal act of arson when an attempt was made to burn down a Jewish synagogue in Melbourne, doesn’t our government-appointed short-sighted Jillian Segal understand the reason behind it? Yes, there is NO REASON that condones such an act of terrorism but attempting to shut down democracy, muzzle free speech and silence the justifiable international rage against Netanyahu right now is NOT the way to go. Netanyahu is a cold-blooded, remorseless WAR CRIMINAL – a megalomaniacal political psychopath who’s murderous army (under Netanyahu’s directions) is gunning down, killing defenceless non-Jewish men, women and innocent little children (Muslims and Christians alike) as they attempt to flee Netanyahu’s KILLING FIELDS along the Gaza Strip and elsewhere throughout Israel! What non-Jewish people he fails to murder, Netanyahu now chooses to slowly starve to death locked up in appalling concentration camps reminiscent of Hitler’s death camps in WWII. Whilst nobody in our egalitarian nation would have a problem with Jillian Segal being Jewish, we sincerely hope that she is NOT a Netanyahu sympathiser!
Wake up, Jillian Segal! Wake up, Albanese! Your criticism and outrage against the arson attempt on the Jewish synagogue is, indeed, valid BUT if it is used as an excuse to defend Israel and the malignant psychopath, Netanyahu, it is definitely NOT OK. We need to cut all ties with Israel and Trump’s twisted version of America (who openly supports the unconscionable war criminal, Netanyahu) and our government needs to grow a spine and have the courage and moral fibre to stand up and openly condemn Trump and his pet dog, Netanyahu!
Segal and politicians on BOTH sides of the political fence must NEVER forget that famous and very true adage: “Appalling EVIL can and will happen when good men (and women) say and do nothing”! Speak up and speak out LOUD against injustice, corruption and inhumanity and allow OTHERS to do so through public protest marches and FREE SPEECH which is our basic right!
Targeting universities for protests that included Jewish students shows this is not about anti-Semitism and all about silencing dissent against the genocidal actions of the Netanyahu government.
In one of the SMH articles they quoted Fair Work’s claim that protesters stormed lectures while carrying signs saying “Jews not allowed”. Of all the footage of protests I can find no evidence of signs saying that. With so many camera phones it should be easy to provide evidence as that would be proper anti-Semitism. I hope Fair Work didn’t just believe hearsay.
Segal, while being interviewed on the ABC targeted the ABC for anti-Semitism for repeating a report of one of the hospitals in Gaza being hit by an Israeli missile when the IDF claimed it was a missile fired from Gaza that fell short. She of course accepted the Israeli claims. I remember that incident and the fact that the damage done to the hospital was far worse than any of the Hamas rockets could cause and it completely ignores the fact that the IDF have bombed every single hospital in the strip with claims of tunnels underneath without any verifiable evidence.
Anyone interviewed regarding the plight of Gazans were asked to condemn the terrorist acts of Hamas so to make sure no group is being discriminated against, anyone discussing ‘growing anti-Semitism’ should be required to condemn the war crimes and breaches of international law by the Netanyahu government.
Ms Segal is a special envoy for Israel and Zionism. Her “report” should be filed in the nearest garbage bin.
I have now read the Report prepared by Ms Segal : https://www.aseca.gov.au/sites/default/files/2025-07/2025-aseca-plan.pdf
What strikes me is that you could substitute references to antisemitic for any number of other groups who are periodically subjected to hatred and vilification ranging from Catholics to Muslims, Blacks, Asians, Irish you name it.
As regards semitic peoples, the irony is that Palestinians are semites [a member of any of the peoples who speak or spoke a Semitic language]. probably the peoples of Palestine are of greater semitic origin than modern day Israelis; so, Jews are actually practising antisemitism themselves! And we do know that many Jews in Israel literally hate Palestinians – settlers and Israeli political, military and religious leaders have at different times described Palestinians as “a cancer”, “vermin”, and called for them to be “annihilated”.
This is probably one report that deserves to be binned as it is an affront to all who believe in freedom of speech and communication.
How has it come to this that a foreign lobby group that no Australians voted for has more power then Australians who have a vote.
How has it come to this that Australian politicians will trash international laws and conventions to enable a foreign lobby group dictate Australian foreign and domestic policy.
How has it come to this that the smallest group of the Australian people has the loudest and most effective voice.
How has it come to this that the indigenous people of Australia cannot get a voice and be heard.
How has it come to this that antisemitism is now a far more heinously egregious affront to common human decency than the blatantly obvious orchestrated and systemic genocidal apartheid of a disimpowered nation and
the mass slaughter of that nations most innocent, the children.
Equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism and Judaism with Zionism are a ruse and two dangerous misconceptions that are blatant distractions ment to play into the hands of those who are justifying racial and religious apartheid while Zionist Israel conducts its rapacious genocidal war in Gaza, unabated. Their intent is to
deceive and inhibit us from using our critical thinking abilities so as to apply our findings with consistent clarity and objective forthrightness.
Shamefully and without any regard for principles, values or morality, spineless Western politicians grotesque submissiveness to US hegemony and pro Western sanctimonious scum media propagandists have legitimised Zionist Israel’s barbaric and evil trashing of international laws, Christian values and foundational principles that will culminate in the capitulation of civilised society as decent human beings know it to be.
Thank you Michael; well done.
No democracy on the planet should be restricted by the demands of a minority group. What this so-called envoy proposes is that we legislate to “allegedly” protect this minority group who seem to think they are more important than anyone else in our society. Like myself I am sure the majority of Australians would be mortified about these demands. Suggestions like changing school curriculums to include details of the holocaust, punitive actions because “someone” thinks you are not stopping anti-semitism, etc………..all pretty much adds up to racism by Jews against the entire rest of society. You will like us or you will be punished. Basically, you do or say something against them…………..and you have a life-long jihad against you. I use the example of Mel Gibson, yes he said horrible things, he did apologise…………but he was then literally run out of Hollywood (Jewish controlled) to never work there again.
That example is what they are trying to do now only on a much larger scale and I for one do not want to see our democracy destroyed by a racist minority group.
per ajogrady’s relevant question apropos the ferocious fracas following the release of Jewish culture warrior and Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism Jillian Segal’s recommendations; to whit, bringing down the hammer on anyone who dares to besmirch the holy Jewish race by virtue of utterance of warranted criticism against those who would engage in genocide via the targeted murder of unarmed men, women & children, the repeated carrying out of unconscionable atrocities, the wholesale razing of homes, hospitals, schools & universities along with denial of food, water, medicine, shelter… her sense of offence apparently a function of a peculiar style of parsing of the phenomenon… the IDF and others in Israel and their actions ought not to be linked to the apparent support of those actions by the local Jewish community and to target the local community for criticism of their apparent support by proxy is an outrageous slur against good people apparently going quietly about their lives, just as heinous as vocalising support for the blighted Palestinians now in a deeply existential struggle for survival… their international support a mere granule against the massive aid afforded the Israeli colonists – arguably illegal on that point – and usurpers of lands traditionally occupied by those they now endeavour to exterminate… yet Ms Segal takes affront at the illumination of these sordid details and is afforded shelter by the incumbent federal government for her pro-Zionist views; anyhow, to come to ajogrady’s relevant question; how has it come to this that the indigenous people of Australia cannot get a voice and be heard? … an Occam’s Razor response might suggest it’s due to the fact that the Aboriginal people of Australia are a dignified people not typified by a chest-beating sense of hubristic superiority.
Very whiffy and Orwellian from the start with a running campaign of anti-semitic events tagging, arson of synagogues, and the blame is apportioned to universities and the solution is to threaten them?
Without going into detail it’s not new and has occurred elsewhere including France etc., but now it’s only US, UK and Australia?
Correlates with the footprint of Murdoch, Atlas Koch and Tanton networks; hence our ‘skip’ media, political, social and business elites are at best anodyne, or afraid of speaking out in favour of following orders, & not becoming a target?
Worse is how Netanyahu has flirted with the anti-semitic European and US far right, going back to 2015 (of course both Putin & Trump), but nada?

Then the rest, the open anti-semitism on the pro Netanyahu and Frankenstein Trump creators…. Fox News informed by Tanton Network’s bigotry, anti-semitism and Islamophobia; see Tucker Carlson et al anti-semitic dog whistling of Ukraine’s Zelenskyy, ‘the great replacement’ and the Soros conspiracy.
The latter Soros conspiracy is anti-immigrant, Islamophobic and anti-semitic dog whistle that was confected by Netanyahu’s Finkelstein and Birnbaum for Fox Board Abbott’s chum PM ‘mini Putin’ Orbán…maybe Tony Abbott should be asked for comment?
Locally it kills several birds with one stone including more Atlas Koch pressure on universities, (climate & social) science, ‘woke’ and research; freedom of speech (whatever that means…), Tanton Network demands to cut international enrolments (to cut revenue & ‘population growth’, immigration restrictions) etc.
However blindingly obvious to anyone with Voice No campaign, Nazi salutes in Corowa, right wing claims that ‘the left is anti-semitic’ etc. can only be plausible if our media and politicians ignore similar offshore campaigns and the ever present white Christian nationalism…..and don’t dig too deep.
Apparently related news in Hungary with new law allowing Orbán’s regime to remove Hungarian citizenship from dual citizens, and has been alleged that with an election campaign coming, Orbán’s Fidesz is going to demand Soros’ citizenship is rescinded, for desperate -ve anti-semitic campaign agitprop (Orbán’s daughter is migrating to Trump’s US, just in case) vs more robust opposition..
Here’s an overview of Soros conspiracy, Finkelstein and Birnbaum

‘Thoughtful article by Louise Adler AM prominent publisher with Jewish heritage :
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jul/12/the-special-envoys-plan-is-the-latest-push-to-weaponise-antisemitism-as-a-relentless-campaign-pays-off-ntwnfb
Adler makes the point on Segal’s appointment : “…one might argue that Segal’s previous position as president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), an unequivocal advocate for Israel as the Jewish homeland, should have disqualified her for the role.”
Looks like we now have a ‘voice’ to Parliament, but it’s not Indigenous.
Segal is a ZION@ZI apologist reported as a major ”political donor” to Advance.
This appointment by the Albanese LABOR government is the stupidest decision since LABOR declined to persecute the creators of Robodebt that killed 2,200+ innocent wrongly charged Australian voters.
Albo will be relieved to be on holiday in China, while there’s a shitstorm of bad decisions being shredded back home.
Sooner rather than later he’s going to have to right the ship SS Labor,or he’s going to go down with all hands lost.
We DO NOT need a repeat of 2007-2013.
THIS WHOLE SAGA IS REPUGNANT AND A LIE – BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR ALBANESE AND LABOR – THIS IS ONE STEP TOO FAR
I find it repugnant that we have Jillian Segal (an unelected person with no definable constituency or representative authority), someone of Jewish birth clearly representing Israel’s interests, not Australia’s nor necessarily Jewish people or Judaism, and being appointed envoy in an Australian multicultural democracy telling the rest of us how to live, what is right and what is wrong, especially in the face of Israel’s war crimes, genocide and 77 years of illegal occupation in the Middle East, repression of the Palestinian people, nation and apartheid… now escalating to the establishment of a concentration camp and ethnic cleansing of an entire population of more than 2.5 million.
This person under these circumstances telling the rest of us in Australia how to define antisemitism and by ignoring the existence of and conflation with Zionism, attempting to suppress by legislative and legal means the right to peaceful protest, free and responsible speech. I need no lecture from such a person in such a role or position on freedom of speech, antisemitism, racism, moral conduct or hatred. I do not recognise her right or who she represents to claim such power and status over us. It is utter madness and hypocrisy.
Do we have an envoy for all other cultures, religions and diaspora? Why do we even need legislation on antisemitism at the expense of recognising all other forms of racism and hatred (for which we already have legitimate legislation)? And why now in the face of Zionist Israeli genocide, the very thing that repeats the holocaust of WW2, both of which we all abhor and protest, even apart from our basic civil rights and freedoms. The problem of antisemitism is with the few, not the overall and responsible fair minded majority, so why implicate us all in this hostile process and threaten to punish us all with loss of freedoms for the criminality of the few – and I would add Netanyahu, his government, secret service – Israel’s interference in our internal affairs, surveillance, special operations (terrorism), manipulation and political attacks on Australian soil, our democracy, as one of the key agitators and perpetrators of antisemitism, even on its own diaspora here in Australia to silence us all.
I for one will not bow to any of this – It is unconstitutional, it legitimises what Israel is doing in Palestine allowing for a corrupted and misguided defence of the indefensible. Her appointment, position, status, allocated task (her report, recommendations included) and reach, in my view are a threat to our democracy and sovereignty. I totally reject any attempt to claim this is in any way remotely antisemitic. But what it wreaks of is hypocrisy and smells of forthcoming repression of similar or comparable ilk imposed in Israel itself and other countries such as Iran, Russia and USA.
‘Segal has long been an advocate for Israel in Australia. In November 2023, she co-signed a statement condemning foreign minister Penny Wong and the Labor party for calling for Israel to “cease the attacking of hospitals”, and its support for a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire’.
She is clearly duplicitous here representing Israel and current day Zionism, and astonishingly supports the bombing of hospitals, a human rights violation and war crime.
