THE CLIMATE COUNCIL today urged Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to urgently accept briefings from leading climate scientists and emergency service experts, after he admitted during the ABC’s leaders debate that he didn’t know if climate change was making extreme weather events worse.
“Climate experts are ready and willing to brief Mr Dutton anywhere, anytime,” said Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie.
“It’s outrageous for a senior political leader to be so out of touch that they claim they ‘don’t know’ the risks Australians are facing. In 2025 there is no excuse for someone vying to be Prime Minister not to have educated themselves thoroughly on the science and impacts of the climate crisis.”
Mr Dutton’s comments come as new data shows two million homes and businesses are now at moderate to high risk from worsening, climate disasters, like floods, coastal erosion and bushfires.
“Australians are paying $30 billion more in insurance costs than we were a decade ago. People living in vulnerable parts of the country are increasingly finding they can’t insure their homes because it is unaffordable or unavailable,” said Ms McKenzie.
In Mr Dutton’s own electorate of Dickson 3,692 properties are at such high risk of escalating damage from extreme weather that insurance is becoming unaffordable or could be withdrawn.
“Australians remember the Black Summer bushfires when then-Liberal leader Scott Morrison, rejected repeated offers from experts to brief him on the risks of a catastrophic fire season. Ignoring the experts meant that the Coalition government had not prepared for the Black Summer that followed which certainly put more Australians in danger.
“We hope Peter Dutton doesn’t also bury his head in the sand and takes the opportunity to get informed on one of the biggest risks to our community.”
Emergency Leaders for Climate Action, an organisation bringing together 35 former fire and emergency chiefs, recently offered to brief Mr Dutton on escalating risks of extreme weather. They received no response.
Independent sites such as The AIMN provide a platform for public interest journalists. From its humble beginning in January 2013, The AIMN has grown into one of the most trusted and popular independent media organisations.

Bone ignorant, thick of skull, under educated, of Saharan aridity in awareness, inexperienced, ill qualified, the leader of our flopposition, Peter Duckwit-Futton, relies on childish assertions followed by backtracks and admissions, a stunt to get anything out, even rubbishy lies. He isn't fit to hold a hose, even his own.
It is morally culpable for an aspiring leader to be ignorant on such an existential risk. We are only a part of preventive action , so we must be vigilant and forward thinking on adaptation as well as minimisation . Leaders should lead .
:D Thanks Phil, your aptness and humour often makes my day.
He's also a bully, filled with hatred. I'm no psychiatrist but he seems to be a Mummy's boy. She put him on a pedestal and told him he could be anything he wanted, and pretty soon he was looking down on her without a skerrick of respect. The boy couldn't make friends, and took a lot of flack from the kids at school, leading to his hateful, vengeful nature.
I've learned that these types do tend to rise to great heights where they can indulge themselves and do a lot of damage.
It beggars belief that this bollard headed dunce is the'leader' of a once major political party.Says an awful lot about the abject mediocrity of his underlings. Then again, the qualifications for becoming a Queensland copper were:Bigot, racist and thug, and probably dill.Nothing's changed.
If you don't know, vote no again.
But please don't listen to scientists, they talk the language of science, don't read widely and don't ask any questions.
Mmmmmm. and he wants to be PM?
P Duddy won't say or do anything about climate change without prostrating himself before Ginormous to receive her "wisdom".
Oh dear PP your description of Boofhead Duddo is so erudite ( so I will not bother to try).
“Climate experts are ready and willing to brief Mr Dutton anywhere, anytime,” said Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie.
A kind offer from Amanda McKenzie (a credible McKenzie) that overlooks the obvious assertion from Blind Freddie that Boofhead Duddo does NOT look beyond the end of his nose in any matters impacting upon those mere mortal voters of Australia.
As the ''leader'' of the rabble ''leftovers'' from the most corrupt nine (9) years of Australian government since 1901, Boofhead is all-knowing within the orbit of his nose and everything else is an irrelevant distraction.
Scientists obviously know more about climate change from hard experimental work than a racist former Queensland cop, so climate change cannot be important to other voters.
Duddo does not care what happens in the Dickson electorate because his principal residence is located beyond the electoral boundaries on the Gold Coast.
Boofhead does not ''hold a hose'' or ''fill a sand bag'' because he is far too busy attending LIARBRAL$ party fund raising with the millionaires in distant Sydney, well away from the discomfort of flooded house and long clean-up periods.
VOTE 1 ALI FRANCE IN DICKSON & GIVE AUSTRALIA A CARING POLITICIAN.
Boofhead Dutts has no intention of hearing from scientists or technocrats of any kind. Every low-grade fibre of his existence is immersed in conceit and no empathy and his brutal boganism as a witless attempt to fit in, coupled with his dull humourless mummies boy demeanor, saw even the Qld coppers gift him dog food on his departure. And later his cruel disparagement of the plight of Pacific Islanders, the Biloela family, the Oz Lebanese, young African immigrants and his walk-out on the apology to the 'Stolen' generation - all disparagements emblematic of his saturation with old colonial 'white supremacist' ethos.
On top of these foundations is his learning and adoption of greed and opportunity from his surrounding status quo, regardless whether it's immorally complicit or destructive. As well as being in his builder father's property business, he was a long-time political aspirant in the Liberal Party hard right wing. His first attempt at election failed at the same time he failed miserably at university leading him to become a walloper of the notorious Qld police where racism and sexism abounded (a different kind of learning). It took him a decade more, part time, to gain a Bachelor of Business (a quest for credo?), all whilst a Qld walloper, working with his father's business, and pursuing politcs. He left the Qld police and soon after won his first seat in parliament. There can be no doubt about his doggedness.
Howard soon latched onto him, as Dutton's m.o. was cultivating 'mates of convenience' to his very right wing leanings (many in the property development industry). He was known in the Party as a 'spear carrier' for the right wing Party base, so of course Howard quickly promoted him again and again. Despite this, by 2018 leadership challenge his popularity within and outside the Party was excruciatingly low. His blunders and failures in his ministries were manifest.
Inside the Party, his alignments were of the extreme right, and had him aligned with those promoting coal mining, climate change deniers, corporate profiteers and fossil-fueler backed political networks such as Advance / Atlas.
These days he virtually stammers and chokes when challenged to talk climate change or climate change abatement. His is an anti-intellectual background - that is his populism. He avoids science, and particularly sciences associated with climate change and environmental sustainability. And international economic and strategic sustainability is as far off his radar and capabilities as it is for T-Rump ..... such is bogun business.
The sooner he's out of politics, the sooner he can further feeling sorry for his miserable self.
