We❤️the Arts in Ku-ring-gai

It’s time to fashion a daggy costume, put your heart on your (red) sleeve and throw yourself into an event for the whole family, Ku-ring-gai!

Local community members have been redirected to the Uniting Church Hall, Killara brimming with arts talent from the upper north shore for a rainy day event next Sunday.

Performers

Performing groups include the fifty-strong local Hummingsong Choir, the Killara Scottish Country Dance Group, a string sextet from the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra, the Challis Singers and a Kathak Indian dance group and more!

 

Raining On Our Arts

This last minute venue change is for a “We Heart The Arts” jamboree of performance promoting Marian Street Theatre; that was originally to be held in Selkirk Park adjacent to the locked site of the old theatre.

Hearty Master of Ceremonies Tony Bates says organisers will not miss a beat, despite the chaos of relocation. The event is ticketed but free.

Home is Where The Art Is

“We’re all here for the creative energy that has been cut from the centre of our community. Bradfield is aching for a public hall belonging to us all. The arts are alive here, but they do not have a home,” said Bates.

Marian Street was once all of that; being where Nicole Kidman was an usher, Hollywood actress Jacki Weaver displayed her skill and one local political candidate found her voice.

Meanwhile, local groups scramble for a venue that is multicultural, secular, accessible to all.

Broken Arts in Bradfield 

An inclusive meeting space bought, built and funded by locals sits locked and condemned due to political inertia. It decays in a safe, natural setting with trees, healthy wildlife a walkable distance from public transport and parking. Childrens’ parties, grandparent outings, play rehearsals, drama workshops, messy set and props creation cannot be made from tiny flats. Classes have been scattered from St Ives to Chatswood, making it harder for young families to attend.

Reducing Congestion

Naturally, developers have their eye on such precious land – ignoring the fact that local infrastructure and community resources are already clogged. Every region needs a local hub. Many facilities in the region are already bursting under the pressure of new high rise apartment buildings for families.

Arts Attacked 

Restoring Marian Street Theatre has been overlooked by politicians at every level of Government for some years. Pork barrelling of sports and further-flung facilities has not addressed demand nearer Sydney’s centre. Getting kids off screens is easier if they can participate in lively local arts events.

Contributions from state, federal and local government should be matched by community and philanthropists to keep creativity throbbing.

Each political candidate in the region is invited to commit to the rebuild of Marian Street Theatre. Will they undertake to allocate funds or will party treasurers have a coronary?

Bring new life back into the area by covering and attending!
