Barnaby’s net zero nonsense: disgraceful and delusional

Climate Council Media Release

Barnaby Joyce’s push to repeal net zero is disgraceful, delusional, and totally out of step with the Parliament and the country.

“It’s a stunt – and it’ll be swiftly squashed in Federal Parliament.” said Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie.

“But it is another disgraceful tactic in a long history of spurious claims and peddling climate denial. While in Parliament, Mr Joyce was part of a number of governments that tore down climate programs, slashed science funding and damaged Australia’s renewable power industry.

“What he’s really advocating for is more floods in Taree, Grafton and Lismore. More deadly marine heatwaves destroying our oceans and fisheries. And the terminal decline of the Great Barrier Reef. He should have the courage and honesty to look those communities in the eye and tell them: I’m fighting for a future that’s hotter, harder, and more dangerous,” Ms Mckenzie said.

It comes as the Climate Council today releases new analysis of the latest climate science. It provides stark and urgent warnings:

  • Global heating is now having significant economic and social costs for Australians with hundreds of thousands of people affected.
  • Unchecked climate change would cost Australia $4.2 trillion by 2070 and 8.8% of Australian properties will be uninsurable due to high exposure to climate disasters by 2100.
  • Strong targets are essential to protect Australians from worsening climate harm, open economic opportunities in clean industries, and enhance our security relationships in our region.

“Barnaby Joyce isn’t standing up for the bush, he’s selling it out. His smug front-page photo in The Australian today made me sick. If he had his way, we’d burn fossil fuels forever and blow past every climate threshold, to hell with our kids’ future,” Ms Mckenzie said.

“The Coalition has now lost two elections because voters want serious climate and energy policies. There’s no future with younger Australians if the party follows Barnaby Joyce off this cliff.”

“The rest of the Coalition should draw a line. Mr Joyce is campaigning for a future of more fires, more floods, more food insecurity. Are they with him, or with the communities already paying the price?”

  1. B Joyce, a political dungpile of irrevant avoidable mess, is basically a driven drunk, an irritable itch, a subnormally inferior fronty operator for donor profiteers. Murdoch, an international skimmer by cunning criminalities, would platform such a dunce, a footpath flattener and brewery supporter, actually a rented blathering botty. We are doomed, cursed, NOW, about severe weather in future, and some old colleagues in Lismore know it as never before. Joyce is a cerebral scar, a prattling pox, a BLOB. But, the fat frau of the west will fight on for GREED.

  2. What is wrong with the people of New England, it is not like they are all uneducated hillbillies who thrive on ignoring scientific fact.
Armidale is a Uni Town and both it and Armidale as are smaller centres, home to many professional people as well as supposedly educated people with supposedly open minds and sophisticated outlooks.
The same can be said for the Seat of Riverina with Wagga and other regional centres similar to New England.

  3. Bananababy is purely and simply playing to Gina and parroting what she pays him to say. Is it my imagination or has he started hit the sauce again?

  4. P. Sullivan, curiously, I went to college in Wagga Wagga and did a first degree at U N E., so believe me that many “country” types adopt an insincere grin, a do it and bugger them attitude and an underdog’s way of swelling and fighting. Joyce “promises” to chase, get, grab, justify, hoard and “win” and they all know it is life’s lie to be “good.”

  5. A powerful article that lays bare the extent to which some of our politicians are deeply compromised. Barnaby Joyce’s opposition to net-zero isn’t about protecting rural communities—it’s about protecting the profits of fossil fuel donors. Australians deserve leaders who act in the public interest, not in the interests of corporations.

  6. How much is Gina donating to the National Party ? Do we have real time disclosure of political donations yet ?

The only reason I can see for Joyce’s nonsense is that he is acting under instructions from Gina Rinehart in exchange for political donations.

  7. I don’t understand how Barnaby Joyce gets voted back into Parliament. He certainly doesn’t address the existential issues easily demonstrable in rural and regional Australia, let alone his immediate electorate. Coming from a rural community I know that “bushies” are smart people but why do they repeatedly vote him back into Parliament? Are there no other credible candidates?

  8. It’s not just Gina, she doesn’t get a vote in NSW. The problem is democracy…. Barnaby is elected by the people of NSW. The ‘problem’ with democracy is that it allows disparate voices to be heard, allows debate to occur and allows a vote where hopefully, wise decisions are made.
With the current parliament Barnaby can scream as loud as he likes from the roof tops, but the vote will go against him.

  9. So Barnaby, dog forbid, doesn’t want the leadership back, he’s content being a back bench warmer. Wait…wait…is that a real estate flier in his back pocket for a block of flats and half of Tasmania for sale? Old joke, for sure, but Barney likes rehashing all his old favourite lines and brain farts.

  10. I just have the same old question – who dafuq is voting for this moron????????????
