Tim Wilson and popcorn sales

The drama is heating up with the Goldstein seat turning into quite the rollercoaster. Tim Wilson, who confidently declared victory over teal independent Zoe Daniel after a tight count, is now sweating as postal votes narrow his lead – down to just 302 votes in the latest updates. His early triumph seems premature, and the tables might be turning as Daniel gains ground with each count.

Wilson’s response hasn’t been pretty – he’s accused Daniel’s scrutineers of “knocking out informal votes with extreme precision,” a claim he aired in a leaked WhatsApp chat dubbed “Goldstein Blue Tsunami.” He’s urged his own team to counter this, a hypocritical move, especially since he’s dodged questions about his own scrutineers doing the same. These tit-for-tat tactics, in my world, are unethical and desperate. His lack of grace – contrasting Daniel’s measured wait for final results – adds fuel to the fire, making his panic almost comical.

If Daniel pulls off a comeback, it’d be a delicious twist, turning Wilson’s early victory lap into a humbling stumble. With around 900 votes still to process, including absents and pre-polls, the race is too close to call, but the sentiment online is buzzing with glee at the prospect of his downfall.

Daniel’s steady approach – waiting for the final count – keeps the suspense alive and Wilson’s emotions high.

Grab some popcorn while you still can. The word on the street is that thanks to Tim Wilson, stocks are running low.

  1. As of Thursday Zoe Daniels is trailing Tim Wilson by 302 after coming down from a losing deficit of 1400 on Monday.

Receipt of Postals closes today !

  2. a loss couldn’t happen to a more deserving conceited, arrogant IPA representative

  3. I think Tim Wilson benefitted from an “anonymous” flyer that claimed that Zoe Daniels was anti-Semitic – something that would definitely make a difference with the large number of Jewish people in Goldstein.
Just the kind of dirty trick he might have played.
A prime grifter like him deserves to be booted.

  4. Slightly off point !

The heroes at SKY after Dark had their knickers in a knot over what Albo did at the swearing in which they claimed was appalling – I couldn’t work out what they were on about but having done some research, it seems that Albo in common with several others chose an ‘affirmation’ rather than swearing on a bible. When they quizzed him about this, as a Catholic, he said that he favoured a separation of Church and State : at SKY that’s a hanging offence but I support his logic. What do you think ?

They also were deeply offended at SKY that there was no pledge of allegiance to the “King and his heirs and successors according to law. So help me God.”

Who are these people at SKY do they just get offended because their boy lost his seat, or are they reading from a Murdoch script that gets written into their employment contract or do they really believe that in 2025 we should be ‘tugging the forelock’ to a foreign monarch ?

  5. It is possible, at long odds, for Wilson to lose, and how lovely that would be, the end again of a pustular, immature, bent, brownshirt operator. Un-Australian in basics of atitude and record, Wilson is a smear on the political role of service and decency.

  6. Oh please please, let Zoe give the execrable Tim his exquisitely deserved comeuppance. Even if he does finally win it will be by such a narrow margin he will have little moral authority.
Terry Mills, agree with you wholeheartedly and while I recognise it could be difficult for people to take religion out of their decision-making I wholeheartedly agree with the separation of Church and State. Sadly I suspect its religious beliefs, and the old boys networks, that have led to the education funding imbalance facing public schools.

  7. As a resident of Goldstein, I received, weeks before the election, a lovely package from Tim Wilson’s office. It was a fat package, with a postal vote all beautifully set out, so that the right boxes were ticked, and I didn’t have to do anything except sign it, and post it off to the Electoral Commission. What an easy thing to do! I wonder how many others thought that. Unfortunately I chucked mine straight into the bin, and no longer have it as evidence.

  8. I don’t quite get this “extreme precision” stuff with the votes.
They are either valid, or invalid. If they valid, count them. If they are not, they miss out.
If, to be fair, either of the two teams of “scrutineers” are tossing votes because they are valid but have extra markings on them, chuck out the scrutineers and let the AEC do its job in peace.
Having got that off my chest, Please, please, please let Zoe win.
The entire liarbral campaign around any Teal opposition has involved skullduggery, from illegal mailouts in Wentworth to breaching Council bylaws in Kooyong. All without penalty. Young Timothy, obnoxious private school snot-nose prat that he is, has been parading his win around like Ceasar, or Apolo Anton Ono the ice-skater who behaved as if he had won the gold medal until his race started and he didn’t. (Hi, Mr Bradbury).
Our boy has even gone so far as to lob his hat into the ring for a liberal party dealership spot.
That he has had to swallow his victory speech, eat some humble pie, and get back into the ring for one more round has been extremely satisfying. It would be the icing on the cake to see his smug, self-satisfied face get smacked into the cement pavement of reality with another election loss. To a Woman. A Teal Woman.
May the Fates make it so.

  9. New Bruce,

I think everybody would agree that Prince Timmy is a pile of bullshit stuffed in a human disguise.

  10. @Noel Wauchope, a small query.

If your electoral rubbish that you received from Tim Wilson’s office was the same as the lovely package from every other Lieberal candidate’s office, I am surmising that the address on the pre-prepared envelope was the Lieberal candidate’s office, not the AEC.

This is so they can harvest your details for future mailouts. I could of course be wrong, but voters in many (ALL?) electorates report receiving a similar “lovely package”.

  11. Just alone the fact that he turned up at a 2024 ANZAC dawn service he was not invited to as a guest, and got in a physical fight with one of current Goldstein MP Zoe Daniels’ staffers who was holding the presentation wreath so he could snatch it and place it himself, was a sole reason to NEVER VOTE FOR THIS PATHETIC DESPERATE ATTENTION SEEKER EVER AGAIN for anything except ‘One of the Biggest Narcissistic *holes in the History of Politics.’

  12. I also received a ‘lovely package’ in the mail from Liberal Dan Tehan for the seat of Wannon. I donned gloves, cut it up, and rendered it to the bin so as to avoid its pollution.

As for slimey Tim from Goldstein (a division with the largest Jewish population in Oz), I note last year (October) he took out a front page ad in the Australian Jewish News declaring himself to be ‘Proudly Zionist’.

Today the postal vote count has Zoe Daniels closing in on the sleaze ball, Tim. The margin now is only 206 votes. It would be just so excellent to see him exit slithering down the slippery slide to ignominy.

  13. Danto Egoe: Thanks for reminding us of this shameful behaviour on his part.
Most people would have forgotten about it.

  14. Scrutineers cannot toss out votes. They can query their validity, and the electoral officials may decide, if the query is valid, to remove them into the informal pile, but they will continue to be “in the count” and will be re-examined if there is a very close result or a recount. There are always votes that show some problem, and the electoral officers make the final decision as to whether the voter’s intention is clear or not, or if there is some problem that makes the vote informal, such as someone writing their own name on the paper.

  15. Goldstein is still not final with Zoe Daniel’s late surge, she trails Liberal Tim Wilson by 135 votes with everything counted. That has improved from a 292-vote deficit last Thursday.

There will now be a full distribution of preferences in Goldstein. If the margin after this distribution is under 100 votes, there will be a recount. Zoe Daniel could also request a recount.

Wilson wants Daniel to concede and is calling her a ‘sore loser’ which is a bit cheeky from him as the seat has yet to be declared. If Wilson does prevail, expect him to make a bid for the Liberal leadership; it is his destiny as he sees it.
