Media Release: The Climate Council
In response to the Australian Federal Election result so far, the Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie said: Australian voters have resoundingly rejected Peter Dutton and his nuclear plan.
“This was an energy referendum. Nuclear bombed at the ballot, with Australians dubbing it toxic. Australians backed a bright, clean, renewable energy future and endorsed the progress that has already been made.”
“Polls consistently showed nuclear was unpopular and voters preferred a renewable energy plan to a nuclear one.”
“Peter Dutton is now just the third sitting party leader to lose their seat at a federal election. He not only nuked his party’s chances of winning with pro-pollution policies, but the nuclear fantasy has cost him his own seat.”
“This is one of the lowest primary votes ever for the Liberal Party. Australians sent a clear message in 2022 and again tonight. The Liberal-National Coalition will continue to be unelectable until they come up with a credible policy to cut climate pollution. The largest voting cohort in Australia is now a climate voting block, with three quarters of millennials and gen Z saying climate is a top issue.
“This election has seen a strong swing to climate independents in areas left devastated by Tropical Cyclone Alfred, and right around the nation the Liberal Party’s heartland has eroded as if hit by a cyclone.”
“Voters have shown they will punish candidates who make mistakes on climate issues. Peter Dutton admitted he was unsure about climate science while, in Gilmore, Liberal candidate Andrew Constance has been rejected after hinting the Coalition would withdraw Australia from the United Nations climate agreement.”
Dear reader, we need your support
Independent sites such as The AIMN provide a platform for public interest journalists. From its humble beginning in January 2013, The AIMN has grown into one of the most trusted and popular independent media organisations.
One of the reasons we have succeeded has been due to the support we receive from our readers through their financial contributions.

Nobody, with an IQ reaching into double digits and any level of compassion or foresight, are at all surprised at the end-result of the federal election! After all, WHO in their right mind would want our nation (mis)led and (mis)managed by a hateful, racist, condescending megalomaniacal political psychopath like Peter Dutton?
Dutton will be best known for what he FAILED to achieve, his vindictiveness, his notorious total lack of compassion and the manner in which he continually, consistently and inhumanely attacked the poorest, most vulnerable people in our nation! Australians are widely known to have a compassionate concern for those who are less fortunate; we have a long, admirable history of welcoming prospective migrants (from all over the world) into our “lucky country” and we are internationally known as hospitable and willing to give those people, individuals or groups who have fewer advantages, opportunities, or resources compared to others, a helping hand up the ladder to success.
History has shown that power-obsessed, inhumane and dangerously undemocratic LNP stalwarts like Howard, Abbott, Morrison and Dutton did NOT share those values nor had the compassion, tolerance or humanity to implement them. As a result, foresightful egalitarian Australians can no longer connect with the cold-blooded, misogynistic elitists in the LNP/Murdoch/IPA Alliance who not only focus on further enriching and empowering the wealthiest, most powerful elitists in the country but choose to inhumanely target and denigrate the poorest, least fortunate citizens in our communities, cruelly blame them for all of the woes, dysfunction, racial division, hate and inegalitarian inequality that the Alliance have helped generate and foster!
The results of yesterday’s election PROVED – without any doubt – that the HUGE majority of Australians have grown tired of the divisive, vindictive kind of politics that the LNP represent; are sick to the back teeth of the continual venomous attacks against our most vulnerable citizens; disillusioned by the LNP’s constant lies and broken promises and disgusted by the LNP’s stubborn adherence to racial division and inherent misogyny!
Unless the LNP wake up, grow up and have the insight and maturity to recognise their LONG laundry list of failings: their appalling medieval level of alpha male misogyny, their condescending, inhumane contempt for those who are less fortunate and their born-to-rule arrogance, it is highly unlikely that the LNP/Murdoch/IPA Alliance will ever rise to autocratic power again – and that’s a GOOD thing!
Indeed, Dutton’s stratospheric fall in yesterday’s federal election, was no surprise – it was INEVITABLE.

ALI FRANCE (LABOR) ELECTED ON A ABOUT A 10% SWING.
.
DICKSON VOTERS WILL ENJOY HAVING A COMPETENT CARING POLITICAL REPRESENTATIVE WORKING FOR THE ELECTORATE rather than the billionaires.
.
PS ALI FRANCE was the first candidate to DEFEAT A LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION!!!!!
John Howard and Mark Latham should have taught Australians one thing, when someone shows you who they are the first time, believe them the first time. Latham was renowned for having a violent temper and promised that he would curb it, only to spectacularly fail. He was even considered too extreme for one neuron. Dutton could not convince us that he was really a soft-hearted, gentle person. He was always who he was.
Dutton was gracious in defeat, I’ll give him that, but could you have imagined his arrogance if he’d won? I could!
Yes, Dutton is third leader to lose his seat at a general election, but he is the first Opposition Leader to lose his seat at a general election, Bruce and Howard were PMs.
The Liberal Party looks set to be justifiably consigned to the political wilderness for some time, and definitely until it can accept the reality of climate change!
